HowTo: Reduce or disable annoying Windows Update restart prompts

Starting to get annoyed by the message that keeps popping up asking you to restart your computer?
Here's how to make it appear less often, or even to disable it completely:
  1. On Windows 7 click start (on older versions click Start - Run) and then type:  gpedit.msc  and press enter -- NOTE: this won't work on Home or Basic editions of Windows I'm afraid :(
  2. Something called Group Policy Editor should open up
  3. On the left hand side, navigate to:
    • Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update
  4. Then in the right hand pane, double-click on the policy named 'Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations'.
  5. To completely disable the reminders, select "Disabled" and click on OK.
  6. Or to change the time interval between reminders, select "Enabled" and type in the desired time interval in minutes into the box.
    • 1440 is the maximum value allowed, and is equivalent to 24 hours
  7. Click on OK.
That's it done, but you'll need to restart the computer before the changes will take effect!
